Nats Notes (3/6)

by Uncategorized

The Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 yesterday. Elijah Dukes continued with the hot bat, going 1 for 4 with a two run triple to win it. Christian Guzman and Ronnie Belliard were each 2 for 4. Guzman lifted his average to .471 for the Spring and Belliard is not hitting .571. But the bigger story was John Lannan. Lannan pitched 3 shutout innings, scattering 3 hits and whiffing 3. For the Spring, Lannan has pitched 5 scoreless innings and with 7 strikeouts. If the Nats were planning to get Lannan a bit more seasoning in the minors, they may be thinking twice now. Lannan has been quite impressive in both trips to the mound.
The Nats even up their Spring record at 4-4 and face division rival NY Mets tonight at 7PM.
Who remains hot with the bat?
Christian Guzman – has 8 hits in 17 plate appearances for an average of .471. He has 3 runs scored.
Ronnie Belliard – Has 8 hits in 14 at bats. By far the hottest bat on the team. Belliard also added 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

Elijah Dukes – Is hitting .389 with 2 doubles, a triple, and a homer. He also has 3 RBIs.
Who is hot on the mound?
John Lannan – 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. He has pitched 5 scoreless innings on 7 strikeouts.
Chris Schroeder – has pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief work.
Tim Redding is 1-0 with a 3 inning shutout start.
OTHER NEWS: The bullpen prospect we raved and raved about last season here on DCPSR was assigned to Nats camp. Adam Carr has been impressive and the Nationals are excited about his future.

Carr, who struck out a combined 78 batters in 60 2/3 innings for Class A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg last year, impressed the Nationals by having quality bullpen sessions in recent days. The team wants Carr to start developing under pitching coach Randy St. Claire and learn how to pitch the right way.

Carr was a frequent mention in our Farm Report last season because of his dominance in the bullpen in Vermont and eventually Harrisburg. Too bad we lost our database when we switched to a new web host, we could have linked you over to several archived posts on Carr.
The Nationals also began reducing the roster.

The Nationals also reassigned pitchers Mike Bacsik, Tristan Crawford, Ross Detwiler, Mike Hinckley, Charlie Manning, Ismael Ramirez, Josh Smoker and Jim Ed Warden, outfielders Roger Bernadina, Frank Diaz, Tommy Murphy and Jorge Padilla, infielders William Bergolla, Yurendell De Caster and Antonio Perez and catcher Devin Ivany to Minor League camp.

Ian Desmond joined Carr in Major League camp.
