The injury bug keeps biting the Bullets, but the Bullets won’t lay down and die. A team missing its two best players is supposed to stop winning, give up, tank the rest of the season. The Washington Bullets will not. Led by All Star forward Antawn Jamison, the Bullets keep playing hard and tonight at the Phone Booth, they tagged the Hornets with a giant flyswatter.
Jamison scored 28 points and pulled down 9 rebounds and also contributed some excellent defense. The Bullets bench outscored the New Orleans bench 35-21. The Bullets turned the ball over only 7 times and turned 15 Hornets turnovers into 19 points. Washington’s 9 steals and 7 blocks are evidence of the harassing, swarming defense the team played most of the game. Holding a precarious 80-79 lead midway thru the 4th quarter, the Bullets clamped down hard on defense and went on a 19-0 run to put the game away. New Orleans didn’t score again until the game was well out of reach.
How Eddie Jordan and Randy Ayers got Antawn Jamison to play defense is something I don’t understand, but I love to see it happen. Brendan Haywood played better than his statline indicates and his 4 blocks were critical to the overall defensive effort.
Final Score: Bullets 101 Hornets 84
Game MVP: Antawn Jamison [28 points, 9 rebounds]
And now, enjoy Deshawn Stevenson driving another dagger into the heart of New Orleans…
