The Bullets did it. They went into New Orleans, where they had lost 10 straight, and they took a game, in super-dramatic fashion, from one of the best teams in the NBA. And they did it without their 2 best players.
Chris Paul led the Hornets with 22 points and 8 assists, but tonight the best guard on either team was Deshawn Stevenson. He led all scorers with 33 points, including a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to win the game 95-92. Stevenson took the in-bounds pass after New Orleans center Hilton Armstrong hit the last of 3 free throws to tie the game at 92. With 7.6 seconds left and no timeouts left, Stevenson quickly advanced the court to the bench side of the 3 point line, stepped back to create space from the nearest defender and then elevated. The shot flew home, rattled a bit on the iron and then dropped through as the red light flashed and the buzzer sounded. It was a thing of almost unspeakable beauty.
It capped a great game for Stevenson, who hit 11 of 21 shots, including 4 of 10 from 3 point range. He also sank all 7 of his free throws, including two with only seconds left in the game to give the Bullets a temporary 92-91 lead.
Brendan Haywood scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as well as blocking 2 shots. He outplayed bitter rival Tyson Chandler, who fouled out with less than 4 minutes to play. Kudos also to Dominic McGuire [DMac], who was in the game with less than a minute to play for his defense and rebounding. That kid is really showing us that he’s going to stick around in this league for a while. Roger Mason chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
Although the Hornets won the rebounding battle and shot a higher percentage from the field, the Bullets won because they hit 21 of 24 from the line, compared to only 12-22 for the Hornets. In addition, the Bullets took great care of the ball for the second straight game, turning the ball over only 7 times to match a season low established last Saturday against the Bobcats.
Final Score: Washington 95 New Orleans 92
Game MVP: Deshawn Stevenson [33 points]
